Decided to go to the control room, but now I’m hesitating again

Since graduating in 2008, I’ve been working in the workshop; those who started with me have either been promoted or left the job. I think it’s not right to keep staying in this situation indefinitely. On New Year’s Day this year, there were two options: 1) to work as a technician in the general office of the Equipment and Power Department, or 2) to become a scheduler in the production scheduling office. Option 1 allowed one to start working without much effort, while for option 2 it was necessary to pass written tests and interviews in order to meet the required standards. Of course, I had made preparations as well; I applied for a position as a dispatcher. Perhaps having extra options, I didn’t put much effort into the application process. I’m glad that I passed the written and interview tests, but it wasn’t the kind of joy I felt inside – instead, it left me feeling stuck and undecided. 1 means exceeding the expected goals; I didn’t think I would be able to pass, but somehow it just happened by chance! 2 is the main reason: the dispatchers work shifts, and in the state-owned company where they work, everything is decided based on seniority; it’s unclear when this cycle of shifting work will come to an end. It’s relatively easy and flexible to go to the general affairs office. Yesterday at work, I even ran into the supervisor there who congratulated me, which made me feel like a thief, utterly at a loss! The former leaders had all worked on the production front line, so they were generally in favor of going to the control room; I searched online and found various opinions on this topic. It’s really hard to make a decision when faced with such a choice for the first time...
Personally, I think it’s better to work as a technician in the general office of the Equipment Power Department. For a place like the dispatch room, I feel it doesn’t matter who works there; what’s important is coordination skills. In the long run, become a technician. For reference only.

The scheduler is a key assistant to the factory management; you should make good use of this opportunity to get closer to the managers, as it will be beneficial for your future.
Each of the two positions has its own advantages; first, analyze your own personality to see which position suits you better before making a choice!

I think you should conduct a thorough analysis of the two positions to see which one offers more opportunities for promotion in the future. Personally, I feel that the control room is involved in the entire plant’s production processes and needs to have an understanding of all various sections; thus, the knowledge acquired there is relatively comprehensive. However, it might not be highly specialized, and it tends to lean more towards management aspects. Technicians are different; their work is more specialized and they are supervised by experienced masters, which allows them to progress more quickly. However, the level of people they interact with isn’t on par with that of dispatchers, so their career advancement opportunities lie in technical roles.
Look at what the leadership focuses on; where they place emphasis, you will have more opportunities.
