A 316L plate suffered corrosion and leakage after three months; the medium involved was water. It’s not clear what substance in the water caused the corrosion – could it be ions such as Cl or Br? How fast is the corrosion rate of Cl on 316L? At what concentration generally does corrosion become severe? Could corrosion also be caused by other ions?
What does 316L material fear the most? Chloride ions! This is the root cause. The specific corrosion rate varies depending on the operating conditions and concentration. I couldn’t find the data; please, those of you with experience, could you tell me? I’ll learn it too.

It’s best to have the water quality tested. The resistance of 316L to chloride ions varies depending on temperature and concentration; so once the concentration is known, along with the temperature, checking a corrosion manual will provide clear information.
The plates were cleaned repeatedly using hydrochloric acid solutions in a continuous cycling process, for about 3 hours each time, and no leaks were detected
Austenitic stainless steels such as 316L are most vulnerable to chloride ions; pitting corrosion and stress corrosion occur quite severely, so it is better to use duplex steel or titanium.
