Our plant’s DCS system crashes frequently; upon inspection, it was found that many hard drives are damaged. This system is a HONEYWELL TPS system, which was upgraded from TDC3000 in 2009. The hard drive is dual, with one primary and one backup. Everyone, please help analyze the possible reasons. Thanks first!
OP, we have the same issue here; however, we use PKS, and when the hard drive fails we just go to Dell to get it replaced. Could it be that there’s a problem with Honeywell’s system that causes the hard drives to fail more easily? The original poster has the answer now; let’s share it. Honeywell’s previous systems were equipped with SCIS hard drives, which are of high quality and durable, typically lasting for over 10 years. Currently, machines are mostly equipped with SATA hard drives (to reduce costs), and chemical production operates on a continuous basis over long periods of time; it’s normal for hard drives to fail in such conditions.

The fundamental reason for this is the owners’ desire to reduce costs, which forces suppliers to opt for alternative products that are of slightly lower quality but offer better cost-performance ratios.

The day before yesterday, a DELL engineer came to replace 9 hard drives; he thought it was caused by the ground wire of the three-phase plug not being connected, and I’m afraid the same thing might happen. All ground wires have been connected now. I’ll observe for a while longer. Thank you all!
Aren’t you guys grounding it? What the Dell engineer said makes sense. No wonder you break easily. Without grounding, static electricity and similar charges cannot be easily discharged, which can easily lead to damage to electronic devices. Well, actually, a dual-hard-drive setup does not last as long as a single hard drive. The reason is that if one of the drives in a dual-drive setup develops bad sectors, the contents of the two drives will become inconsistent, and the computer will try hard to make them match by reading and writing repeatedly, which eventually leads to damage to the drives. With just one hard drive, it’s fine; even if there are bad sectors, it can still be used – there might be occasional crashes or similar issues, but that’s all. Haha, anyway, the control stations are arranged in rows, so it won’t really affect monitoring
Hard drive damage is closely related to the power supply; first, check whether there are any issues with the UPS output power, and second, check whether there are any problems with the computer’s power supply unit.
What the marine friends have said makes sense; adding my own experience: 1. Check the power supply for the GUS unit, using a multimeter to do so. If it has been in use for five years, it is recommended to replace it with a DELL original or a reputable power supply of 300W or higher. 2. The host must be placed in a location free from vibration. 3. It is recommended to use a single disk. I am using a single drive, with another hard drive available that contains a clone of the system. When the hard drive fails, replace it immediately with a spare drive; it takes very little time and will not affect production, unless you only have one GUS. Since 2003, my two GUS units have had their hard drives replaced only once; the faulty ones were all Hitachi drives, and it seems that Seagate’s Cheetah drives are quite good. So now I go to Zhujiang Road to buy Seagate spares.
4. I forgot to mention that it’s also important to check whether the case’s cooling is working properly. My GUS server is placed in an iron cabinet, with two large fans that draw air out, which works very well.
