Dear marine friends, have you used tower cranes for the installation of steel structures in your projects? What is the tonnage? How is it working?
Our company has never used tower cranes in steel structure installation; we have always used truck cranes or crawler cranes instead. But I’ve seen some construction companies use tower cranes; I think the tonnage should be determined based on the maximum weight of the steel structures, as the lifting methods are more or less the same.

For small-scale structures, a truck crane is sufficient; tower cranes are better suited for construction projects with longer timelines and those that involve the use of many machines. Truck cranes are ideal for installing small-scale structures, especially when the prefabricated components are quite large, as this allows for centralized lifting and thus helps to reduce machinery costs. Currently, there are two types of tower cranes in use in China: one is of the cylindrical type, and the other is of the cantilever type. The most widely used is the cantilever type. It is easy and flexible to use. Moreover, it has a wider coverage area. If the weight to be lifted is large and the machinery is used frequently, using a tower crane is more cost-effective compared to a crane. When selecting a tower crane, two points need to be considered: First, determine preliminarily where the crane will be installed. As a general rule, it is advisable that the crane’s swing radius be as close as possible to the components to be installed; however, consideration also needs to be given to the installation of the crane and its attachments, as well as its subsequent removal. Second, based on the preliminary location determined for the tower crane, determine the maximum weight of the components at the greatest distance; the specifications of the tower crane are then set according to the maximum weight of the components at that farthest rotation radius. I have experience using 400T tower cranes and 750T tower cranes. Their service life is quite long, reaching one and a half years, which makes them quite cost-effective compared to using large cranes.
Crane towers are frequently used in steel structure installation, as they represent the most economical cost for such machinery. Of course, it is generally used for longer construction periods, with appropriate component weights and structural forms.
Crane towers are generally not used; instead, truck cranes are employed as they are more convenient and flexible. However, it is harder to find ones with a high lifting capacity.

We have few steel structure factories here, but many steel structure supports, which are scattered throughout. Prefabricated components are transported to the site using gantry cranes, while truck cranes are used for delivery on-site. The crawler crane has never seemed to be used
