If the pump has just started operating, a finer filter is required – at least 80 mesh. After it has been running for some time, the mesh size can be changed to 40 mesh or 20 mesh, depending on the pump’s performance. It mainly depends on the properties of the material and impurities; if it is too fine, the pump will not be able to draw in enough fluid, resulting in insufficient pressure.
It is essential to consider the relationship between the filter mesh size and the pump’s flow rate. Adjustments should be made while ensuring that the process requirements are met. The smaller the mesh size of the filter, the greater its impact on the pump’s feed rate, which can lead to insufficient flow or even cavitation. Too high a mesh size results in poor filtration of silicon powder, which in turn affects the service life of the shielded pump and increases maintenance costs.
The choice of mesh size for a shielded pump depends mainly on the properties of the medium being transported by the pump. Generally, the mesh size should not be lower than 20 mesh; however, if it exceeds 80 mesh, it may cause the filter to become clogged too easily, and the pump may not receive adequate lubrication, leading to premature damage.
40 mesh is fine; the corresponding pore size is 0.38 millimeters, which should be quite suitable. The inlet filters for magnetic pumps and shielded pumps present a dilemma: if they are too fine, cavitation occurs; if they are too coarse, the pump gets damaged. It’s heartbreaking to see the canned motor end up in such a miserable state as part of a steel rolling mill.

Taking the shielded pumps in our workshop as an example, my filter mesh was initially 50 mesh; later on, it became clogged to such an extent that it caused problems, and this also led to the pump running dry. Shielded pumps are particularly prone to damage when they run dry, so I changed the filter mesh to 40 mesh. As long as the large particles are blocked, there is basically no problem with the pump.
