Should the expansion joint on the shell side of the heat exchanger be placed at the steam inlet end or at the condensate outlet end?
There are also considerations here; if there are no special requirements, we usually place it in a position near the middle
As long as it can accommodate the expansion difference between the shell and the tube bundle, it doesn’t matter which section it is placed in; it depends on the requirements of your structural design
Without affecting installation, place it on the other side of the steam outlet, that is, on the side far from the steam outlet.

Generally, the expansion joint of a vertical heat exchanger is placed below the ear support
The reason is that the number of process ports on the other side is smaller, making it easier to expand.
When the lugs are located below the expansion joint, the weight of the equipment above and the supporting force of the lugs **limit the free expansion of the expansion joint, thereby reducing its thermal compensation capability
It is generally installed a bit closer to the steam inlet, mainly because the expansion coefficient on this side is higher than that on the lower side.
I believe that the expansion joint should be located in the middle of the shell, but away from the baffle – (the area around the expansion joint should not contain any baffles)
