Do methanol and purified water generate chloride ions in a vaporization tower? What kind of damage does it cause to the equipment? What reactions take place in the converter? What is the main reaction? What are the side effects?
The main reaction is CH3OH + H2O = CO2 + 3H2; side reactions produce dimethyl ether, and the gases contain hydrogen, CO2, CO, etc. Desalinated water is required to have a chloride ion content of less than 3 ppm and a conductivity of less than 20 us; otherwise, it will poison the catalyst and reduce the conversion rate. There are also requirements regarding methanol as well
It is particularly important to note that chloride ions cause severe corrosion of stainless steel; this is something to be experienced firsthand, so remember this!
Regarding the issue mentioned by the original poster, the key is to control the quality of the purified water. As long as it is properly controlled, the chloride ions will not exceed the permissible level, and thus no corrosion will occur to the equipment.
