Direct steam extraction from the tower top, followed by condensation without reflux – what is the effect? Won’t the tower be very unstable?
I don’t understand where the liquid that flows downward in the tower equipment comes from; unless heat is introduced through thermal coupling on the tray, and there is also a liquid feed at the top of the tower.
If the product is of good quality and the feed supply is stable, there should be no problems. I wonder whether this tower was originally designed as a distillation tower or a rectification tower?
If there is no reflux, it is simply distillation; in that case, a packed tower is unnecessary, and the product obtained will be crude. This is acceptable if no quality requirements exist.
If it is only a rough separation, reflux is not necessary.
In other words, if strict quality requirements are in place, reprocessing is necessary; without such reprocessing, it can only be considered distillation, but not true rectification, right?
The owner can opt for a simple separation as well, but this depends on the difference in boiling points between the two phases; at the same time, the temperature (the boiling point of the component with the lower boiling point) must be strictly controlled
The separation efficiency of a tower without reflux is poor; it’s acceptable as long as the product meets the requirements.
Without reflux at the top of the tower, it becomes distillation, and the separation efficiency will deteriorate.
If there is no reflux, it can only be called simple distillation, not fractional distillation. Of course, if the separation requirements aren’t high, it’s still possible!
Without reflux, it’s simply a distillation column. If your material system can be separated in such a simple manner while still meeting the requirements, then there’s no problem; Otherwise, reflux is required to make the extraction meet the desired standards.
