I have a gentle question: what is the role of a server in DCS?
It should be related to data routing and historical data functions. There are two types of points in the system: one type consists of actual physical measurement points, which are located in field control stations and communication stations; these points include information such as the type of measurement point, physical address, signal processing methods, and display options; One type is virtual measurement points; the difference from actual physical measurement points is that they lack information related to physical locations. Virtual measurement points are stored in the server’s database, and trend charts can be viewed on the operator station, with historical data also being accessed through the server.

Transmission and exchange of data between the field devices and the central control system, data storage and recording, human-machine interaction interfaces, deployment of configuration settings, routine maintenance; it can also be used for horizontal connections with other servers to enable data exchange, as well as for uploading data from hardware of various versions. Monitor the status of various nodes, etc.
In simpler terms, it’s a temporary “stopover” for data input, output, and processing”
