Catalysts are usually covered with such fillers; they come in spherical and ring shapes. Spherical ones have a higher specific gravity but a lower throughput, while ring-shaped ones have a lower specific gravity but a higher throughput.
Spherical shapes are generally used more often.
Use small refractory balls first, then large refractory balls, and finally wire mesh.
Alumina refractory balls are generally used, which are spherical in shape.
