Heat is applied to this brine using a plate heat exchanger; however, the saltwater side of the heat exchanger often gets clogged, resulting in frequent maintenance needs and high maintenance costs. How do people deal with this issue? Please share your thoughts. , , -
Just supply steam directly to the brine tank for heating; our heat exchangers also get clogged frequently, and it’s not easy to resolve that issue
This post was last edited by Yinozhang on 2010-3-3 21:06. It is best not to use a plate heat exchanger for heating brine, as it tends to get clogged easily; a shell-and-tube heat exchanger is the better choice. Heating directly with steam is good, but it affects the halide ratio.
We use shell-and-tube heat exchangers, with two units being replaced; there is no effective solution for scaling.
Plate heat exchangers cannot be used; scaling is severe and cleaning is frequent; A shell-and-tube heat exchanger can be used, along with an ultrasonic descaling device, which can effectively solve the problem of scaling.
Can it be heated using hot water (around 60°C)? Will scaling still occur when using hot water for heating? Or rather, scaling would be reduced, I wonder if there are any manufacturers that use hot water for heating? Could we talk about experience?
Using hot water results in too low heat exchange efficiency; increasing the heat exchange surface also leads to the problem of scaling.
Purification equipment can be added in the early stage to remove calcium and magnesium impurities. Plate preheaters are preferably not used; a tubular preheater can be chosen instead. If scaling occurs, it can be removed by acid cleaning or mechanical high-pressure water cleaning.

There’s nothing we can do; our company also produces soda ash using all-halide processes, and we use plate heat exchangers as well. These exchangers often get clogged, and when that happens they have to be taken apart for cleaning.
