What is the impact of low carbon dioxide purity on compressor operation?
Currently, carbon dioxide compression machines are mainly of two types: 1. Reciprocating compressors and 2. Centrifugal compressors. In both types of compressors, high levels of hydrogen, an impurity present in carbon dioxide, can lead to hydrogen embrittlement at high pressures. Since the molecular weight of carbon dioxide is higher than that of air, centrifugal compressors convert kinetic energy into static pressure energy in order to generate compression force. Therefore, when there are significant changes in the mass per unit volume (when the amount of air added for corrosion prevention deviates from the normal levels), abnormal behavior may occur in the compressor. Moreover, if carbon dioxide gas contains water, it not only causes corrosion to pipeline equipment but also causes severe damage to the valves in reciprocating compressors.
For reciprocating compressors, the most obvious manifestation is several units experiencing four-stage overpressure simultaneously.
