“A steam cloud explosion occurred in the high-pressure oil pump room of a 250,000 tons/year hydrocracking unit at a refinery in our country. The facility had been in operation for less than a year when a major explosion occurred due to a hydrogen leak in the high-pressure oil pump room. It resulted in 45 deaths, 58 injuries, and severe damage to the factory buildings and equipment. Production was resumed only after a two-month shutdown. ” I came across this while organizing documents today; did such a tragic accident really occur in China’s hydrogen history? It’s heart-wrenching and sends chills down one’s spine!
If I’m not mistaken, it’s most likely an accident that occurred at Daqing Refining and Chemical Plant.
That’s right; initially, along with the introduction of catalytic cracking units, two hydrogenation units were also introduced. However, due to explosions, these units were not developed further in China. Moreover, as catalysts kept evolving and quality requirements for products were not strict at that time, China made great efforts to promote the development of catalytic cracking! ! It should be noted that those who sacrificed their lives at that time were all elites in the field of hydrogenation in the country; some of these elites managed to escape disaster, but not the ten-year catastrophe that followed.
It’s not that production will resume in two months; it will only resume after a two-year shutdown. I came across this post after hearing a senior talk about this accident. After this accident, some survivors who were not at the scene were investigated; among them were workers from this factory as well as highly skilled technicians transferred from Yumen Refinery, and they were labeled as spies, traitors, and counter-revolutionaries. During the Cultural Revolution, when the legal system was in disarray, these people (many of whom were implicated) were sentenced to death. This matter eventually attracted the attention of the central authorities, and Premier Zhou Enlai personally intervened, allowing them to avoid execution. However, they still couldn’t escape punishment for their crimes, and they didn’t lead comfortable lives thereafter.
Accidents are merciless, and human hearts are even more so.
