Dear colleagues in the power industry, those who work on plant automation systems – do you need to understand in detail what signals from devices such as GIS, transformers, MCCs, breakers, CTs, PTs, etc. need to be sent to the DCS and what their respective functions are? Or is it sufficient to know just which signals these electrical devices need to transmit back (and are those signals provided by the motor control system)? Another question: Does the DCS only control the switching on and off of electrical devices, or does it also contain logic for controlling the protection functions of these devices (with the exception of tripping pumps when the liquid level is too low during the production process)? Or are these protection functions (such as synchronizing power supply connections) implemented within the electrical devices themselves, with the signals they transmit back serving merely to facilitate decision-making in the control room?

At present, our automatic control system only monitors high-voltage equipment; it does not provide any control function. This is the case for both transformers and distribution cabinets, and electrical standards also state this. For the MCC (motor control cabinet), there is at most remote start/stop; it seems we can’t do any other functions. Please, the experts, share more
