Commonly used in China are fixed-bed gas generators; improved versions based on these are the fixed-bed pressurized gasification reactors; Advanced ones include GE, SHELL, LURGI, GSP, and the four-nozzle gasifier from East China University of Science and Technology, etc

1 Overview of Coal Gasification Technologies At present, there are mainly three types of coal gasification technologies, as follows: 1.1 Fixed-bed (mainly uses lump coal) 1.1.1 Atmospheric pressure fixed-bed (such as U.G.I furnaces, Entho furnaces); 1.1.2 Pressurized fixed-bed (e.g., Ruhr process furnace). The main technical drawbacks of fixed-bed reactors are low carbon conversion rate, high energy consumption, and severe pollution. 1.2 Fluidized bed (mainly for burning coal) mainly includes technologies such as Winkler furnaces, U-Gas furnaces, and ash polymerization. The main technical drawbacks of fluidized beds are low carbon conversion rates, high energy consumption, and difficulty in operation. 1.3 Gas flow bed (mainly for burning pulverized coal) 1.3.1 Dry pulverized coal (e.g., Shell furnace, GSP furnace, shell furnace, HT-L furnace, two-stage furnace, etc.) ; 1.3.2 Water-coal slurry (e.g., Texaco furnace, multi-nozzle water-coal slurry, multi-component slurry, etc.). The main technical advantages of the fluidized bed are high carbon conversion rate, high gasification efficiency, and good environmental performance; however, it requires high investment and is suitable for use in large-scale coal chemical complexes.

Basically, it falls into the categories mentioned above. The commonly used technique nowadays is the fluidized bed wet process, such as the GE technology (formerly Texaco technology).
Texaco’s technology is more mature, while Shell’s is not yet as mature
