Someone came by today to promote a coal-burning additive. I wonder if your organizations have used it before? It’s a powdered additive that is said to be able to reduce coal consumption by 30% – I’m not sure if that’s true or not
I’ve heard of it, but I’ve never used it. It’s likely mostly nonsense. There should be an effect, but it can’t be that great
30% seems unlikely, but 10% is something we can achieve.
It was previously believed as well that the coal-saving effect of oxidizers could not be very high, but they might be beneficial for the environment. I have also been paying close attention to the collection of information on coal combustion aids recently. There are very few reports from users on coal savings, and many of the reports provided by fuel additives sellers are questionable in terms of credibility. From the perspective of coal-saving principles, it is mainly driven by heat-induced decomposition to provide oxygen for combustion, as well as catalytic effects (some forms similar to emulsification are said to be able to break the large molecular chains in coal). Generally, it needs to be mixed with coal after adding water. It seems that it may have a relatively significant effect on specific types of boilers that use coal with low volatile matter. Systems in which coal remains in the furnace for too short a time to be completely burned, resulting in high levels of residual carbon after dust removal from the exhaust gases. It is said to work best with chain boilers. I have been conducting tests on steam production per ton of coal recently. For about two days, something rather strange happened: the coal had a low calorific value, low volatile matter content, and high ash content. During operation, the furnace temperature can be increased; the layer of material at the bottom should not become too thick, otherwise coal cannot be fed in (as the furnace temperature will rise quite high). It’s not very stable either (it stopped working once). It seems like some kind of oxidizer has been added; the coal suppliers deny this and claim it’s just the raw coal from the mine. If an oxidizer is indeed added, it does save a considerable amount of coal; it is estimated that more than 20% less coal is used (but the steam pressure remains the same as that of coal with similar industrial analysis). It cannot be fully explained using the knowledge of combustion and heat transfer that I currently possess. If someone comes to sell an oxidizer, I would like to try it out for free for a short period after signing the agreement, in order to assess its economic benefits and safety. Since our furnace is a modified circulating fluidized bed boiler based on a chain grate boiler, its output has always been insufficient. The temperature in the furnace is about 100 degrees higher than that of conventional CFB boilers, yet the amount of dust and carbon residue removed from the exhaust gases remains high. If the degree of combustion directly within the furnace can be increased, savings in coal consumption should be achievable.
