I also only know that according to the standards, if it exceeds 1600, a supported type is used; I’ve never questioned why exactly
Who said it can’t be done? It just needs to be calculated and verified.
It’s probably not that it can’t be used; it’s just that the standards don’t cover it. If it needs to be used, one will have to calculate it manually.
Containers with a diameter exceeding 1600 should not use leg-type supports, as the increasing diameter leads to greater weight of the container; this in turn results in higher stress levels at the junctions where the leg-type supports meet the cylinder, which is detrimental to the safety of the container.

A larger diameter implies higher manufacturing quality. For leg-type supports, the stress acting on the cylinder is shear stress, which poses a greater risk; in contrast, with support-type structures, it is normal stress. Therefore, for vertical containers with a large diameter, skirt bases or supports are generally used.
