Naviswork Review 2010 can handle models exported by most 3D software
I’m a model created by pdsoft; it’s over 100M in size, and 2G of memory on the machine seems to be insufficient.
The mainstream PDS, PDMS, and autoplant all come with their own dedicated model browsing software. As for non-mainstream software such as PDSOFT and CADWORX, the manufacturers lack the capability to develop their own solutions and must rely on general-purpose software; Naviswork is a good choice, with the latest version being V2010. The last version of Naviswork before it was acquired by AUTODESK was V5J, my favorite version. It removes unnecessary formats and only supports the ACAD2004 format; its size is just over 100 megabytes after installation, and model browsing works smoothly. V2010 is already large and resource-intensive, with not many features to offer. My machine has 512 MB of memory; CAD models under 20 MB can be viewed smoothly, but larger models cause problems. The guy upstairs has 2 GB of memory and can view 100 MB models without any issues. Try rendering it with your ACAD software – if it can be rendered in CAD and viewed smoothly using the 3D Dynamic Viewer, then there’s no problem using Navisworks as well. Navisworks just uses more memory during model conversion; after conversion, a file is generated, and opening this file later makes viewing much faster. PDSOFT allows for the setting of model precision; generally, it is set to 50 or 100. For models with a size of 50 or 100 megabytes, this value should be reduced, with 20–30 being sufficient. When viewed using Naviswork, CAD models need to be rendered again; the display quality is rougher compared to viewing them directly in ACAD. There’s no need to make the models overly detailed. I’m sure the original poster has set the display precision too high. For my model, which includes 550 pipes, over 40 devices, steel platforms, pipe corridors, and pipe racks, the file size is only 40 megabytes; just imagine how large a model with 100 megabytes would be.

When opening a CAD model directly in Naviswork, the software will automatically convert the model; this process is rather time-consuming, so patience is required. After the conversion, a new model is created and a file is generated; this model is automatically rendered by Navisworks. The next time Navisworks is opened to view the newly created file, no further conversion is needed, as Navisworks displays the converted model. The toolbar offers various viewing modes such as flying, rotating, walking, etc. You can give them a try – it’s easy to master. There’s no special operation required; there are some settings within Naviswork as well, but I haven’t examined them in detail – it’s good enough. I have the Chinese instructions for V5J.
