The main tool used for determining multiple utility requirements in Pinch technology is the Grand Composite Curve (GCC). The GCC is a graph that shows the temperature ranges versus the corresponding heat flow values generated by the PTA. The GCC for the process streams depicted in the grid diagram (Fig. 1) is shown in Fig. 3; it indicates the heating and cooling that need to be provided by external heat and cold sources, in terms of both temperature and the amount of heat flow required. The point where the GCC intersects the temperature axis (where heat flow is zero) corresponds to the location of the process pinch.
