Does the reciprocating pump experience cavitation? Please discuss!
Reciprocating pumps generally have self-priming capability, so it is not necessary to fill the pump before starting.
In my personal opinion, cavitation is occurring!
Based on the principle of cavitation, cavitation should be occurring. But it is rarely encountered in actual production.
There definitely are. However, the pressure of a reciprocating pump varies periodically, resulting in a relatively short cavitation time even if it occurs.
Cavitation in the reciprocating pump should exist, but it is very mild. It’s not as severe as with centrifugal pumps. Cavitation in centrifugal pumps has a severe impact on head, but its effect on reciprocating pumps is much smaller, with virtually no impact at all. Unlike centrifugal pumps, reciprocating pumps can expel the air inside them, eliminating the need for priming.
Like reciprocating pumps, they also suffer from cavitation issues, though to a lesser extent; however, in practical use, the inlet pressure requirements still need to be met!
