Wuxi has stopped doing this business, Nantong mainly focuses on producing silk bundles for use in tobacco manufacturing; I haven’t gotten in touch with those in Zhuhai, and it’s likely they aren’t any better than Nantong. There are really not many companies in China that specialize in cellulose acetate design; this industry is dominated by a few large corporations both domestically and internationally, while the downstream sector is controlled by tobacco companies. As a result, technical exchanges are difficult, and there is severe technological isolation, which prevents design companies from making any progress. Manufacturers may possess the latest technologies, but they are not skilled in engineering design; licensing such technologies out is akin to trying to steal from a tiger. Currently, foreigners are reluctant to grant technology licenses or share knowledge regarding high-tech, high-value-added products; it’s better to keep such technologies to oneself, right? Moreover, the market for cellulose acetate is limited – once too many companies enter this market, it becomes saturated and no one can make a profit. In addition, without cooperating with tobacco companies, there is no market for the cellulose acetate produced; the monopoly on tobacco means that tobacco packaging materials are also under controlled distribution, and without the approval of tobacco companies, nothing can be done.
Hubei Xinyang Chemical Fibers possesses the technology to produce yarn bundles, but due to the monopoly held by the tobacco industry, no one in China is willing to purchase them, so they can only be exported. What a tragedy.
