What is the purpose of a pressure differential gauge in the design of the inlet and outlet of an ammonia cooler? What problem does a large pressure difference indicate?
It can indirectly indicate a problem with the cooling water supply volume; a large differential pressure indicates that an excessive amount of water is being supplied.
I believe installing pressure difference gauges at the inlet and outlet of the ammonia cooler can indicate whether there are issues such as internal leaks or blocked pipes.
Pressure difference meters are installed at the inlet and outlet of the ammonia cooler, primarily to reflect its operating condition. For specific models of ammonia coolers (tubular or coiled type), the operating pressure difference remains stable; if it is too high, it may indicate blockages or flow deviations, and in such cases, treatment via steaming or disassembly for inspection should be carried out. The pressure gauge on the ammonia pipe at the outlet of the ammonia cooler can indicate whether there is a cross-leakage phenomenon (high pressure leaking into low pressure).
The pressure gauge installed in the ammonia cooler is mainly used to determine whether the ammonia cooler is clogged.

I believe its purpose is to measure the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the ammonia cooler, in order to assess the efficiency of cooling. I understand that ammonia coolers work on the Joule-Thomson effect (that is, based on the principle of throttled expansion); the greater the pressure difference at the inlet and outlet, the more pronounced the Joule-Thomson cooling effect, and conversely, the cooling performance will be poor. Therefore, the inlet and outlet pressure difference gauge is used to determine the quality of the throttling refrigeration process in the ammonia cooler. This differential pressure gauge certainly cannot detect leakage issues; if there is a leak, it is sufficient to analyze whether the low-pressure side contains characteristic products from the high-pressure side. Agree with moderator Yan’s opinion
Pressure difference meters are installed at the inlet and outlet of the ammonia cooler, mainly to determine whether there is any blockage in the tubes inside the cooler and whether there are leaks in the gas partitions between the inlet and outlet. However, under normal conditions, due to the low resistance of the ammonia cooler, the readings provided by the instruments in our plant are often inaccurate, so they don’t hold much value for inspection purposes. It is mainly determined based on the cooling effect as well as the evaporation liquid level, gaseous ammonia pressure, and temperature inside the ammonia cooler.
