That thing is a heat exchange device with one end being small and the other end being large. It is generally used in heat exchange during phase changes
The kettle-type heat exchanger differs from other heat exchangers in structure in that it has an evaporation space at the upper part of the shell; the size of this evaporation space is determined by the amount of gas to be produced and the desired quality of the steam. The tube bundle of this type of heat exchanger can be of the floating-head type, U-tube type, or fixed-tube-plate type.
