When choosing between a coupling and a belt for transmitting power between a Roots blower and its motor, what are the advantages and disadvantages of each? The air volume handled by the Roots blower ranges from 340 to 2500 m3/h, with a normal operating speed of 3000 rpm
With my limited experience, all the Roots blowers I’ve seen are driven by belts

Such small Roots blowers can be driven by a belt or directly via a coupling, although belt drive is more commonly used.
For such small fans, all those I’ve seen are connected using couplings.
The fans mentioned by the original poster are relatively small, and couplings are generally used.
Belt connection is simple and convenient, and easier to align as well. Moreover, it is usually large rotary vane blowers; since the motor speed is low, an acceleration gear or pulleys are needed for adjustment. A coupling means direct connection; since yours is small, the motor is likely to have two speed stages as well, and it can match the 3000 revolutions per minute of the fan, allowing for a direct connection using a coupling. But be careful with alignment; if it’s not aligned properly, it can easily get damaged.
Either one will do, but small fans* typically use belt drives. The coupling has a compact transmission structure and requires high alignment precision. The belt drive belt has slipping characteristics, which can protect the fan from damage in case of overload or abnormalities.
The drive method for Roots blowers typically involves couplings or belts; among belt-driven systems, there are two approaches: direct suspension and use of an intermediate bracket. The choice of drive method is determined based on the performance parameters of the blower, with no fixed rule.
