Can the VCM storage tank be made of stainless steel?
Some use carbon steel, some use carbon steel lined with stainless steel, and there are also those that use stainless steel directly – the choice depends on the conditions of each company.
It’s possible, but the cost is too high and it’s not necessary, so generally no one uses stainless steel.
Stainless steel can be used. There are also those made of carbon steel. If cost is a concern, use carbon steel. If the cost is not considered high, stainless steel can be used. The advantage of using stainless steel is that it makes it easier to clean the tank when the recycled gas contains particles or tends to aggregate. By comparing the two tanks in the plant (one made of carbon steel and the other of stainless steel), it was found that the carbon steel tank suffered severe rusting and corrosion; its surface was uneven, making it difficult to remove impurities from the bottom. We use this tank to store fresh VCM, so there are fewer impurities at the bottom. The recovery tank had issues with our recovery system; during the annual maintenance at the end of the year, almost half of the material inside the tank was removed. Self-polymerization occurred to a significant extent. Fortunately, the tank is made of stainless steel, but cleaning it was still quite troublesome.
Stainless steel can be used; our company has both stainless steel and carbon steel products. If funding permits, stainless steel should be considered
For phase one, we used carbon steel, while in phase two stainless steel was used; the cost increased. As the original poster mentioned, stainless steel is easier to clean!
Our factory uses carbon steel, and the conductivity of the water samples recovered from VCM can sometimes reach 3000+ – which is extremely high; this might be related to it. Does this have a significant impact on polymerization? I’ve been using coarse materials frequently lately; I’m trying to find out why

Even those made of stainless steel are of a composite type, with a thin layer of stainless steel on the inside and carbon steel on the outside.
It’s definitely better to use stainless steel for the monomer recovery tank.
