NPSH (Net Positive Suction Head) refers to the net positive suction head. There are two other concepts: NPSHr (required) refers to the necessary positive suction head, which is determined by the pump itself and the characteristics of the piping system. NPSHa(Available) refers to the effective positive suction head, which is the net value at the suction inlet obtained by subtracting the vaporization pressure (at the suction temperature) head from the head of the liquid (the combination of kinetic and potential energy). They are all positive numbers.
To prevent cavitation, the sum of the static head and dynamic head of the liquid at the inlet of the centrifugal pump must be greater than a certain value corresponding to the saturated vapor pressure head of the liquid at the operating temperature; this value is known as the cavitation margin of the centrifugal pump.

In the newly published API610(11th), the term NPSHr has been removed and replaced by NPSH3, which more accurately reflects the fact that the positive suction head test is based on a 3% head loss. :lol
