Reading palms to detect diseases—how much do you know about self-care?

Fortunetellers use hand reading to predict a person’s future; in fact, hand lines do not necessarily indicate destiny, but they certainly give insights into one’s health. Each finger has acupoints connected to organs. Flexible fingers are right before our eyes – we can see them at any time and press on them wherever we want… Just like our feet, our hands are covered with meridians and acupoints that are closely connected to the body’s organs; when something is abnormal in a certain part of the body, the corresponding area on the palm will also show changes. And the advantage is that the hand acts like a mirror that can be viewed at any time. “\"Look in the mirror\" – by observing changes in the texture, color, and shape of the hands, one can stay informed about the condition of the internal organs; problems can thus be identified and resolved right within the flexibility of one’s ten fingers. Healthy fingers all share these characteristics: the nails are pink, shiny, of moderate thickness, with a proper degree of flexibility and are not prone to breaking; their surface is smooth, and the semilunar shape at the base of the nail (the lunula, also known as the health ring) is white. Quick Reference for Finger Health Care There are 6 meridians that run through the hand, connecting it to various organs, tissues, and structures throughout the body. There are approximately 99 acupoints (areas) that can reflect the health status of the organs throughout the body. Massaging or pressing these acupoints can almost relieve diseases throughout the body. Fingers Corresponding meridians Corresponding organsThumb Lung meridian Heart and lungs
Index finger Large intestine meridian Stomach, intestines, and digestive organs
Middle finger Pericardium meridian Five sense organs, liver
Ring finger Triple energizer meridian Lungs and respiratory system
Little finger Heart and small intestine meridian Kidneys, circulatory system
Unhealthy fingers show different signs:
Nail half-color
Gray: May indicate weak energy, and can lead to anemia, fatigue, and weakness. Pink: It may indicate a decline in the function of internal organs and excessive physical strain, which can lead to conditions such as diabetes and hyperthyroidism. Purple: It can easily lead to poor blood circulation in the cardiovascular system, insufficient supply of blood and oxygen, and may cause dizziness, headaches, and arteriosclerosis. Black: Commonly seen in patients with severe heart disease, tumors, or those on long-term medication. Nail lunula area: Ideal – the area should account for 1/5 of the nail. Less than 1/5: Indicates low energy and poor gastrointestinal absorption capacity. If the lunula suddenly becomes dull, shrinks, or disappears, it is necessary to prevent consumptive diseases, tumors, bleeding, and other conditions at an early stage. When staying up late or having excessive sexual activity, the lunula can also disappear and is difficult to grow back. Greater than 1/5: Usually indicates myocardial hypertrophy, increasing the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, hypertension, stroke, and other conditions. Nail condition: The color is dull, with multiple vertical lines present; this indicates a lack of water in the body, as well as weakened function of the organs and tissues corresponding to that finger. The color is dull, the surface is uneven, and there are multiple horizontal lines: this indicates anemia and malnutrition, or that the body was not in good health several months ago. There are 6 meridians in the hands that travel throughout the body, connecting with various internal organs and tissues. There are approximately 99 acupoints (areas) that can reflect the health status of the body’s internal organs, as well as the communication between various organ systems and tissues throughout the body. Work out anytime, anywhere. The greatest advantage of using the five-finger exercise technique is that it allows us to work out at any time and place: it turns long meeting times into more productive ones, provides something to do during the 10 minutes of rest in front of the computer, and eliminates frustration while waiting for food to be served… In short, as long as we want to, any time our hands are free can be used for exercising. Basic health care: Five-finger massage. Massaging the thumb can help relieve: heart diseases, allergic dermatitis, hair loss, and sore throats ; Massaging the index finger can relieve: constipation, loss of appetite, stomach pain, chronic gastritis ; Massaging the middle finger can relieve: liver diseases, fatigue, excessive appetite, tinnitus, dizziness ; Massaging the ring finger can relieve: colds, sore throat, headaches, frequent urination, excessive sweating, and cold uterus ; Massaging the little finger can relieve: shoulder pain, back pain, irregular menstruation, eye fatigue, obesity, and insomnia. Massage method: 1. Massage the left hand first. Use the thumb and index finger of the right hand to press on both sides of the left hand’s thumb; if pain is felt, hold for another 10 seconds. 2. Use the index finger and thumb of the right hand to grasp the left thumb from above and below, apply pressure, and hold for 3 seconds. 3. Switch to using the right hand for massage; the method is the same. Pain in the fingertips There are acupoints at the tips of each of the five fingers, corresponding to different internal organs. Starting from the little finger, grasp the base of the nail, then press and twist it firmly; if there is severe pain at the tip of the finger, it may indicate a problem with the organ associated with that acupoint. Pain in the little finger: It may indicate a problem with the heart or small intestine. On the tip of the little finger, near the ring finger, is the Shaochong acupoint; on the other side is the Shaozé acupoint. Shaochong is closely related to the heart; when having a heart attack, applying pressure to the tip of the little finger can help alleviate the symptoms ; Shaozé is an acupoint associated with the small intestine; it can be pressed firmly when there is indigestion. Pain in the ring finger: It could be a sore throat or a headache. There is an acupoint on the ring finger; massaging this area can relieve symptoms when suffering from a cold or fever. Pain in the middle finger: It may indicate problems with the cardiovascular system. There is the Zhongchong acupoint on the middle finger; pain occurs here when the heart cannot cope with illness or discomfort. Pain in the index finger: There may be a problem with the large intestine. There is the Shangyang acupoint on the index finger; pressing this finger causes significant pain when experiencing constipation. Pain in the thumb: There are problems with the respiratory system. The Shaoshang acupoint on the thumb is closely related to the lungs. If there is a disease in the lungs and this area is pressed, it may cause such pain that one jumps up. For individual cases, by manipulating the joints and targeting the relevant fingers associated with the discomfort, it is possible to relieve the pain. 3 minutes per session, 1–2 times per day. Liver disease: Pinch the two joints of the right thumb. Tinnitus: Pinch the three joints of the ring fingers on both hands. Diabetes: Pinch the two joints of the left thumb. Since physical health is reflected in the hands, the health of the hands cannot be ignored either. We often type on keyboards and send text messages; “mouse hand,” “keyboard hand,” and “text message hand” are not honorable titles for one’s hands. Some exercises aimed at improving finger dexterity and finger joint flexibility are essential; as for the ones listed below, we can choose them freely. Wave hands: Wave the wrists vigorously in front of the chest for about 10 seconds. It can promote blood circulation in the hands. Ball-throwing: Clench your fists in front of your chest and imagine there is a small ball in your hands. Grip tightly, count silently to 5, then open all fingers and throw them away with force. It can strengthen the palms and wrists and improve finger flexibility. Finger snapping: Use the ten fingers of both hands to simulate playing the piano, tapping each finger starting from the thumb and moving towards the palm. Repeat 20 times. It can improve hand control and mobility. Pressing the fingers: Separate the ten fingers, bring the pads of the fingers together, and press firmly against each other. Until the finger joints become sore and painful. Repeat 10 times. It can improve the toughness and flexibility of the finger joints. Pushing the palms: Bring both hands together in front of the chest, use the left wrist to push to the right while keeping the palms together, then turn to the left. It can strengthen the wrists and improve their flexibility, as well as that of the palms. Finger rubbing: Use the thumb and index finger to massage the fingers, from the base of the finger to the tip. It can promote blood circulation in the fingers. Pulling the fingers: Hold the left thumb with the right hand, turn it, then pull it straight outward with force; repeat this for each finger, and switch to the other hand to do the same. It can help improve blood circulation in the fingers and strengthen the ligaments. Finger swapping: Sequentially exchange the fingers of both hands. It can improve the flexibility of the fingers as well as brain reaction and coordination skills. Relax: Let your hanging arms sway freely, then shake them more vigorously until your hands are completely relaxed. Some things about massage The intensity of massage For most acupoints and reflex zones, no pain means no effect; therefore, a stronger stimulation and greater level of pain are required. But the force used should not be too strong; obvious pain is sufficient. When giving a massage, apply force gently at first and then increase it gradually until it reaches the maximum acceptable level. Order of massage During massage, the man should use his left hand first, then his right hand ; For women, on the contrary, right hand first, then left hand. If there isn’t enough time, it’s sufficient to massage the acupoints on just one hand. Be careful of acupoint fatigue. After several days of massage, as the condition improves, the tenderness in the acupoints decreases, which is a sign that the disease is improving. If the condition does not improve and the tenderness becomes significantly dull, this is acupoint fatigue. The acupoints on the left and right hands are the same; you can alternate between massaging the acupoints on each hand. Tips for massage 1 Rest for a moment before massaging. 2 Hand massage should not be performed within 1 hour after heavy drinking, overeating, bathing, or when experiencing extreme fatigue. 3 If sensations such as soreness, mild pain, or swelling occur in the area after the initial massage, it is due to excessive pressure; the force should be reduced. 4. The acupoint areas on the hands are relatively small; when massaging, some of these acupoints can be stimulated using certain tools, such as the tip of a pen or ballpoint pen (which must be smooth and rounded) to press on the acupoints. 5 During massage, remember to breathe naturally and avoid holding your breath.
