This post was last edited by cnoocwyj on 2010-4-18 09:08. Sulfuric acid has leaked onto the ground – which substance, sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, or lime, is the best for neutralizing it? I know any of the three bases will work; I just want to know which one is safer to use?
Lime! How does one neutralize limestone? Should a large rock be placed on the ground?
Treatment with a mixture of sand and lime is safe and reliable.

Using sodium hydroxide is too expensive in the event of a large-scale leak, and in the case of a leak from a large storage tank, there simply isn’t enough sodium hydroxide available right away. Lime is generally used.
Using sodium hydroxide is too expensive and unsafe; strong acids and strong bases can react violently and even cause explosions. It is better to use sodium carbonate or precipitated lime for neutralization.
Do not apply a large amount of lime over the acid at once; instead, surround it and add it gradually. Otherwise, lime and sulfuric acid may explode.
Limestone? The reaction is too slow; by the time it’s ready, the environmental protection authorities have already shown up. We use lime instead – we dig a small pool in the drainage ditch first, and place a few packs of lime at the outlet where the water overflows into the ditch. A small amount of acid that leaks out doesn’t require any treatment; it can even be recovered and used as dilute acid in the phosphate production process. When a larger amount of acid flows into the ditch, more packs of lime can be added there. As far as I remember, there was only one time when caustic soda was used for neutralization, because it happened to be the day when the environmental protection officials were coming for an inspection, haha.
It’s obviously limestone; sulfuric acid production plants generally keep a few tons of slaked lime on hand, as it is inexpensive, easily available, easy to store, and effective. Using NaOH is expensive, and it is not easy to store. From a safety perspective, slaked lime is also the choice.
Using soil for interception is the best option; no reaction occurs. Once it has been contained, slaked lime can be used to neutralize it gradually – it should not be added in large quantities at once, as this would cause a violent reaction and the production of large amounts of white smoke. Using sodium hydroxide for neutralization is too dangerous, as the reaction is extremely intense.
