In the boiler water wall and reheat steam generator tubes, a pH level above 10 facilitates the formation of a passivation film on the surface, which slows down the rate of metal corrosion; therefore, ammonia is added to the water.

Ammonia is added to adjust the pH value of the desalinated water. Although trisodium phosphate can raise the pH value, it is mainly added for deoxygenation purposes.
