I study engineering; I have a simple question for everyone (I’m even too shy to ask it!). When working on site and connecting pipes with others, I often hear people say that this pipe has an inner diameter of 80, or that another pipe has an inner diameter of 100. Does this refer to the inner or outer diameter? And why do pipes used for water supply seem thinner compared to those used in engineering applications, even when they have the same diameter? The question might not quite fit the topic; please forgive me!
It refers to the nominal diameter DN; by consulting more relevant standards and manuals, one can gain useful information. Different applications and pressure conditions, as well as various process requirements, result in different wall thicknesses of pipes, which is why the pipes appear thinner
The people on site were talking about the engineering diameter – 80, 100, and so on. Steel pipes come in different outer diameters, so even for the same engineering diameter, some pipes are thicker while others are thinner
It refers to the nominal diameter. I think the original poster might be experiencing some psychological effect; for pipes with the same outer diameter or a smaller outer diameter, even if the water pressure is low, the thickness of the walls and the actual size of the pipe remain the same
It refers to the engineering diameter; pipes used in water treatment systems differ from those used in process engineering. Process pipelines are usually made of 20 or 304 materials, while those used in water treatment systems are made of CPVC, ductile iron, etc. There are slight differences in their specifications. Additionally, the outer diameters of large-diameter and small-diameter pipes also vary.
