When a switch is used to turn off electrical equipment, an arc of light is generated between the static and moving contacts when the switch is disconnected; this is known as arcing. The larger the electrical equipment, the greater the arc light produced. Switches are equipped with arc extinguishing covers that break up the arc into smaller segments, making it easier to extinguish them quickly. Without such covers, the arcs would combine with each other, causing a short circuit fault, which in turn can cause the switch at the higher level to trip due to excessive current. The distance of the arcing is related to the size of the electrical equipment. Inductive loads produce much larger arcs than resistive loads. Motors belong to inductive loads, while the heating elements in electric boilers and similar devices are resistive loads. In inductive loads, the current lags behind the voltage by a certain angle, whereas in resistive loads, the current and voltage are in phase, with no angle difference. When a switch is used to disconnect an inductive load, the load generates an inductive voltage; attempting to cut the connection forcibly results in the formation of arcs. Over time, this can cause the contacts to get damaged, and in such cases it is necessary to replace them. High-voltage electrical switches are called circuit breakers, and there are several methods for extinguishing arcs; in some cases, the contacts are immersed in insulating oil to help extinguish the arc more quickly.
