Pressure relief valves and safety valves

There is no significant difference in principle. In both cases, water (or another fluid) is released to reduce pressure when it exceeds a set value. Pressure relief valves are primarily used to protect pipeline systems, while safety valves are used to protect equipment. Pressure relief valves are also known as pressure reducing valves; they are valves used to regulate pressure by taking into account the pressure difference between high and low pressures. If this ratio exceeds 2:1, an additional pressure relief valve should be installed. Its main function is to reduce the output flow when pressure is high and to increase it when pressure is low, thereby regulating the pressure. A safety valve operates based on a set pressure: when that pressure is exceeded, the valve opens automatically to release the pressure or water to a safe area.

Safety valve: PSV, a device used to protect equipment and piping systems; API standards provide strict definitions and calculation methods for it. Pressure relief valve: BDV – it controls pressure by manually or automatically operating the valve; its main purpose is not to protect the equipment, and it is generally used during debugging or in emergency situations. They are generally of the quick-opening type, with pneumatic or electric actuators to control opening and closing. For relevant definitions and calculation methods, refer to the relevant sections of API 520 and API 521 in the United States. The calculation for these two types of valves generally requires an experienced process engineer to carry out.
