This post was last edited by dongliangsir on 2010-4-22 at 15:34. Yesterday, while watching TV, I saw an interview with survivors of the Wangjialing mine disaster; it touched me deeply. There was a large amount of water there, and many of those who survived did so by sitting in mine carts that were floating on the surface of the water. But in one of the carts beside them, there were 3 or 4 people who, due to fatigue and other reasons, fell asleep without realizing it. As a result, the cart lost its balance and overturned, and the miners who were in it couldn’t survive long and all perished. If just one person had stayed awake and moved slightly, perhaps this tragedy could have been avoided. It made me think immediately of our production teams. The members of a team sit together in one mine cart; some are more vigilant while others are more lazy. Some are serious and responsible about their work, while others are careless. Often, only a few people are responsible for keeping watch. In a team, maybe only one or two people (usually the team leader and deputy leader) remain alert, while the rest handle their tasks in a perfunctory manner. (A typical example is sleeping during night shifts; those who don’t sleep are sometimes even considered “stupid”). In fact, whether they realize it or not, they are essentially the ones who keep an eye on the situation. Whether it’s at the team level or at the corporate level, in our military, or in our government, we need such people who keep an eye on things. When most people are deceived by the apparent stability and act carelessly, it’s important to maintain a clear mind and stay vigilant. When the last person who keeps an eye on things falls asleep, that’s when the situation is about to go wrong.
