I have a question: is the pressure required for gas liquefaction related to the saturated vapor pressure? In a closed container, is the liquefaction pressure equal to the pressure difference between the inside and outside, or must the pressure inside reach the liquefaction pressure?
The pressure for gas liquefaction is related to the saturated vapor pressure. It is impossible for a gas to liquefy when its temperature is above the critical temperature.
The liquefaction of a gas must occur at critical pressure, while the saturation pressure is related to the temperature at which liquefaction takes place; in other words, the lower the temperature, the lower the saturation pressure!
At a certain temperature, there is a corresponding saturated vapor pressure for that gas; keeping the temperature constant, if the pressure is higher than the saturated vapor pressure, the gas will liquefy. With pressure held constant, the gas liquefies when the temperature is below the critical temperature.
