Uses of methyl esters

Fatty acid methyl esters have a wide range of uses; I’ve heard that there is also a potential use for them as a substitute for diesel. Could experts please explain how this substitution works? Thanks first!
Fatty acid glycerides are esterified to methyl esters through methanol, right?
**Regulation B20 stipulates that no more than 20% methyl esters of fatty acids (also known as biodiesel) can be added to diesel, provided that the specifications for these methyl esters are met. Biodiesel is produced by reacting lower-grade fats and oils (such as gutter oil and acidified oil) with methanol, and higher-purity fatty acid methyl esters are obtained through processes such as pre-esterification, transesterification, and distillation.
