What is the range for the ratio of heat exchanger tube length to shell diameter?
It’s generally between 3 and 20. You can check it against the table yourself
The standard pipe diameter ranges from 159 to 1800 mm, while the pipe length is usually 1.5, 2, 3, 4.5, 6, or 9. I haven’t seen any specific regulations regarding these ratios
There seems to be no fixed range; if the length of the heat exchange tubes is very large, support plates can be used to address this issue. GB151, clause 5.9.5.3, specifies the maximum unsupported span for heat exchange tubes
The length-diameter ratio of fixed-tube-sheet heat exchangers is generally set between 4 and 6

Generally, the standard forms listed in the process design manual are the ones that are commonly used. Generally, the length of the tube does not exceed 6 meters, as exceeding this length makes the heat exchanger too long and difficult to arrange. Also, generally we make heat exchangers as long as possible to achieve better heat transfer, which is therefore a contradictory issue. You should ask this question around 3 to 30
The book on chemical engineering principles published by Yao Yuying from Tianjin University recommends a tube-length to shell-diameter ratio of 4–6; for heat exchangers with smaller diameters, a higher ratio can be used.
Generally speaking, small tubes such as stainless steel tubes are usually only 6 meters long; therefore, the straight section of the pipe used to convey hot gas is also around 6 meters in length, and it isn’t very long. It’s hard to imagine that tubes with a diameter exceeding 6 meters could be used, as there aren’t strict requirements regarding the height-to-diameter ratio
There is no mandatory requirement for this; the selection of the ratio depends mainly on what seems reasonable, and it will be determined specifically during the selection and calculation process
