What is the principle of lubrication for the crosshead in the crankcase of a piston pump and the three crankshaft bearings?

Another function of the crankcase is to serve as an oil tank; the lubrication of the crosshead is generally achieved by oil entering through the oil holes in the crosshead slideways. The lubrication of the crankshaft bearings generally takes place as lubricating oil enters through the oil holes in the crankshaft journals. The primary method of lubrication for the moving parts of piston pumps is pressure-driven lubrication. Its advantages include an adequate supply of oil, thorough lubrication, and the ability to effectively remove heat from the friction surfaces as well as metal debris; hence it is widely used. In microcomputers and some minicomputers, splash lubrication is also often used, without an oil pump.

The oil pump pumps oil into the crankshaft bearings; there are oil holes in the crankshaft, and the oil enters the big-end bearings through these holes. There are also oil holes in the connecting rods that are connected to the big-end bearings, and the oil reaches the small-end bearings via these rods. Finally, the oil exits the small-end bearings and returns to the crankcase, where it goes back to the oil pump. The flow is: oil pump---crankshaft bearing---crankshaft oil hole----big-end bearing----connecting rod----small-end bearing----crankcase----oil pump
