Is steam leaking from the bypass of the steam trap at your plant?
The bypass is usually in the closed state, so no steam will leak.
Check to see if there is slag or debris stuck in the bypass valve.
Normally, the bypass should not allow air to escape; if this happens, it is possible that there is a leak in the bypass, or that the existing steam trap does not have sufficient drainage capacity or is damaged. A temporary solution is to manually open the bypass
Quality issues with the valves can also lead to steam leaks
Generally, a pressure relief valve is used for draining water; even if there is air leakage, it occurs intermittently. Air leakage indicates a problem inside the valve. If the leakage is minor, it’s usually not a big issue, but otherwise the valve needs to be replaced – otherwise it’s not cost-effective
The bypass is rarely used; it is only employed when replacing the steam trap or during the first startup
