There are many reasons; the original poster’s question isn’t clear enough to answer.
If the pump is operating properly, the return pipe should be unobstructed logically – why is it often blocked?
You haven’t been detailed enough. Open it to see what is causing the blockage. It could be impurities present in the material, or it could be corrosion products resulting from pipeline corrosion. Also, overly thin pipes can get clogged as well
