Why are short pipe joints welded to some drum shells, and why are large holes made in those drum shells?
It’s a counterbored hole! That’s why!
I’m not quite sure about this either; you’d better check it out
Then why are only boilers with a pressure of 3.82 MPa or higher like this?
Plates thicker than 38 MM are not suitable for welding after heat treatment, and pipe fittings serve as a transitional element in this case!
It certainly isn’t for spot welding, because it’s easier to weld if holes are made. Most Class B boiler manufacturers are reluctant to drill counterbore holes, as it’s not easy to do! They don’t have the equipment.
