Today I read some information on hydrogen production through methanol cracking, but the details regarding catalysts and adsorbents were rather vague, with only codes used (probably for confidentiality reasons). Could experts please explain the principles behind these two types of materials? Thank you! It would be best to provide some information on catalysts and adsorbents.
Isn’t producing hydrogen from coal simpler? Methanol is generally also produced by using coal to create syngas.

The red color of methanol is caused by the breakdown of the catalyst used for hydrogen production, which then dissolves into the mixture of methanol and water. You should check whether the catalyst in your reactor has reached its expiration date
Compared with electrolysis, methanol cracking for hydrogen production reduces electricity consumption by over 90%, lowers production costs by 40–50%, and yields hydrogen of high purity. Compared with coal gasification, this process is simpler in design and easier and more stable to operate. Although coal gasification has relatively lower raw material costs, it involves a long process, high investment, and causes significant pollution with many impurities; it requires desulfurization and purification processes, making it unsuitable for small and medium-scale facilities.
The cost of producing hydrogen from coal gas should be relatively low. Hydrogen production via methanol cracking is highly affected by market conditions; given the current price of methanol, producing hydrogen from it should be cheaper than using natural gas
