I am responsible for the piping work myself and have to calculate the stresses involved. The space available at the installation site is limited; there are no pipe racks, so it’s not possible to use springs. The pipes have a diameter of DN350 at the pump inlet and DN300 at the outlet. The operating temperature of the fluid is 150 degrees, while the heating is provided by 10 kilograms of steam. If the temperature used in the piping calculations is based on that of the heating medium, it becomes difficult to design the pipes properly. When 150 degrees is used as the reference temperature, it’s just barely sufficient to meet the stringent stress requirements of the pump inlet, but I’m worried that the stress on the pump inlet might be too low if calculations are based on the temperature of 10 kilograms of steam, which could lead to problems in the future. The deadline is tight and my boss keeps pressing me. I know that cutting corners isn’t the right approach in design work, but no one understands that. If I’m late, I’ll lose my bonus. Take a look at the training materials on pressure pipelines, or the chemical engineering design manuals; I think the calculation should be based on the design temperature of the pipeline. As for what value to use for the design temperature, check those two books
