World’s largest ethane cracking plant for ethylene production comes online

The world’s largest ethane cracker, operated by Rostov Olefins Company (RLOC), recently had its commissioning ceremony held in Rostov, Qatar. The cracking unit is designed to have an ethylene production capacity of 1.3 million tons per year, with an investment of around $1 billion. Qatar Petroleum, Chevron Phillips Chemical, and Total are shareholders of RLOC. The ethane feedstock required for the Ras Laffan cracking unit comes from Qatar’s massive North Field offshore gas field. This facility supplies ethylene feedstock to a linear low-density polyethylene plant belonging to Qatofin Company via pipeline transportation; that polyethylene plant began trial operation last November. Affected by the global financial crisis, the commissioning of this pyrolysis unit was delayed by over a year compared to the original plan.
