In our company, EW is used as the sealing water for lock-hopper circulation pumps and quenching water pumps, while DW is used for the sealing water of other pumps. Is there any difference between them?

What was said upstairs is correct; it’s necessary to consider the pressure of the medium inside the pump, otherwise the sealing water won’t be able to get in.

Another issue is that the instrument washing water for our high-pressure flash evaporation system uses EW, while the instrument washing water for other systems uses DW. Why is that?
In ordinary plants, the quench water pumps, lock-hopper circulation pumps, and slag breakers all use cold seal water, namely EW, while the rest of the pumps and level gauges generally use hot seal water. Generally, the water pressure for cold and hot sealing is similar; it’s just the temperature that differs.
It mainly depends on the inlet pressure of the medium pumped by the pump. The inlet pressures for both the quench water pumps and the lockhopper circulation pumps are quite high; therefore, the pressure of the seal water used must be appropriate. . . .
EW is high-pressure seal water, while DW is low-pressure seal water; one is at 8.3 Mpa and the other at 1.2 Mpa.
It is mainly related to the pressure when the pump is in operation
