I have a question regarding pipes with steam tracing: if the temperature of the fluid is lower than that of the steam, is the steam temperature used only for checking secondary stresses, or should it be used as the reference temperature for both the pipes and the equipment nozzles? Thank you!
Reply to 1# kkman: The fundamental issue is actually what temperature should be used to determine the strength of the relationship – whether it’s the temperature of the medium or the temperature outside the piping. In other words, it’s a matter of the influence of the ambient temperature. But when both the temperature of the medium and the temperature outside the piping come into play, how should their combined effect be taken into account? Personally, I think it’s more conservative to use the higher temperature for calculations, for safety reasons
In my opinion, steam tracing is mainly used to maintain the operating temperature of the pipe being traced; it should be reasonable to use this operating temperature as the basis for checking the stresses on the nozzles……
These can be defined by oneself; there is no unified standard

Generally, extreme values are used to consider the ambient temperature, while for heat tracing pipes, the temperature of the heat tracing medium can typically be used as the operating temperature.
