The function of the upper ceramic balls is easy to understand: it improves the feed distribution. What is the function of the lower ceramic balls? Is it just catalyst support? Is it okay if I don’t use it? Additionally, there are strict regulations regarding the filling height of the inert porcelain balls. What determines this specified height? . Note $ # , $ $
It’s not very clear; the description isn’t accurate. I’ve read some materials before; on the one hand, it serves a supporting role, and on the other hand, it prevents the catalyst from potentially (in very small amounts) entering the downstream system and clogging pipes or equipment, thus acting as a filter.
Estimation is necessary; after all, there are still small particles, and their presence in the downstream section can affect the normal operation cycle.
Usually, two layers are used: ceramic balls with a thickness of 1–3 mm are placed near the catalyst, while ceramic balls with a thickness of 4–6 mm are used in the outer layer; a wire mesh is then placed on the very outside. The screen primarily serves to distribute gases, filter out small catalyst particles carried in the gas, and remove impurities that enter the bed. It also prevents the bed layer from falling and serves to support it. Generally, 100 mm thick of ceramic balls is used for each specification. I didn’t notice that it was specified in that standard. Very fine catalyst particles cannot be filtered using this method; other approaches are required to filter out such catalyst particles that may be carried along.
