You didn’t specify what type of pump it is; different pumps certainly behave differently. For example, in the case of piston pumps, pressure buildup can damage the check valves at the inlet and outlet, and it can also cause damage to the pipes and the pump body itself. A centrifugal pump? It shouldn’t be a problem for long.
