It is speculated that the acrylic acid has not reacted completely, or that homopolymerization occurs in the aqueous phase to produce polyacrylic acid, or... If that’s the case, how can it be determined? How to distinguish between acrylic acid and polyacrylic acid? How to determine the conversion rate of acrylic acid? If there are any other possibilities, please advise. Help analyze the source of the residual odor and how to remove it. Thank you all!
The odor can be qualitatively analyzed using headspace GCMS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry). The determination of the polymer monomer conversion rate (unreacted monomers in the product) can be carried out using liquid chromatography. The procedure is as follows: first, emulsify and dissolve using water, then take the aqueous phase; crystallize with propylene (to cause the polymer to precipitate), and measure the monomer content in the solution, thereby allowing the calculation of the monomer conversion rate
Reply to 2# mangnolia: OK, thanks :) I’d like to try using the stripping method to remove monomers – is that feasible? Will steam have any effect on the emulsion? If possible, how is it done in the laboratory?
