1. I’m so fed up with your BS. Cut the crap. I’ve had enough of your nonsense; stop talking nonsense. American women don’t like using the vulgar word “shit,” so they use words like “shoot” or “BS” (=Bull shit) to show that they’re sophisticated. “Cut your crap” is something you can say when you hear someone talking non-stop nonsense; it’s equivalent to saying “Stop talking nonsense” in Chinese. 2. Hey! Wise up! Be sensible, will you? When someone does something stupid, you can say, “Don’t be stupid” or “Don’t be silly.” But those are very impolite expressions. A more polite way to say it is “Wise up!” which is similar to saying “Be sensible” in Chinese. You can also use a harsh tone by saying, “Wise up, please,” stretching out the ending of “please” intentionally. Some people also say, “Hey! Grow up.” It means, “Can you act more mature?” For example, if someone is twenty years old yet still can’t fix their own clothes, you might say, “Hey! Grow up.” Is this similar to “Wise up”?

3. Put up or shut up. Either do it yourself, or shut up. Some people just keep talking and giving opinions; in such cases, you can say, “Put up or shut up.” Note that “put up” doesn’t mean “do it yourself” in the dictionary, but it’s common for many phrases to have meanings not found in dictionaries. For instance, if you’re coding and someone who doesn’t understand anything keeps giving orders, you can say, “Put up or shut up.” Sometimes, to emphasize “shut up,” Americans say, “Shut the f**k up.” This phrase is often heard in arguments between angry people. For example, in the movie *The House on Haunted Hill*, when the heroine is trapped in a haunted house and others keep talking over her, she gets angry and says, “Shut the f**k up.” This reminds me of the idiom “Walk the talk,” meaning you should do what you say—similar to the Chinese concept of integrating knowledge with action. You can also just say “Walk the talk.”

4. You eat with that mouth? Do you really use that mouth to eat? If someone insults you, you can reply with this phrase, implying that since their mouth is so dirty, how can they still use it to eat? Another version is, “You kiss your Momma with that mouth?” meaning, “Do you use that dirty mouth to kiss your mother too?” So next time, if an American insults you, don’t respond with curses. Stay calm and say, “You eat with that mouth?” and that’ll even things out.

5. You are dead meat. You’re finished. When we say someone is done for, we can say “You are dead” or “You are dead meat.” They mean the same thing. For example, if you tell someone not to touch your stuff, but they keep using it, and you catch them doing it again, you can say, “You are dead meat.”

6. Don’t you dare! How dare you! You have quite a lot of nerve! This phrase is similar to “You have quite a lot of nerve” in Chinese. It can be used in two situations. First, in serious situations—like when a child is being naughty and won’t listen, parents might say, “Don’t you dare!” meaning the child should be careful, otherwise they’ll get punished. The second situation is for joking. For example, if someone tells you they’re going on a date with someone online, you might say, “Don’t you dare?” in a joking tone. (“Aren’t you afraid of getting eaten by a dinosaur?”) “Dare” has many interesting uses in English, such as “You dare me” or “I double dare you.” There’s also a game called Truth or Dare, which I’ll explain later due to space constraints.

7. Don’t push me around. Don’t manipulate me. This phrase is interesting—it means pushing someone around, manipulating them. If someone keeps telling you to do this and that, you can say, “Hey! Don’t push me around.” When I say “Don’t push me around,” I also think of the word “bossy.” “Bossy” means acting like a boss, always giving orders to others. For example, “You are so bossy. I don’t like that.” You can also say simply, “Don’t push me” or “Don’t push me any further.” There’s another idiom related to “push,” called “push the button,” meaning to give orders or control someone. For example, “I know why you’re doing this—someone is pushing your button!”

8. Are you raised in the barn? Did you grow up in the countryside? This phrase is used to describe someone who lacks manners, but it’s said in a joking manner. For example, if someone sits improperly, you can say this to them. “Barn” originally refers to a barn, but I translated it as “the countryside” to better match the Chinese meaning. Americans often use “barn” or “backyard” to describe someone who is uncivilized or uneducated. For example, I heard someone say on TV, “No backyard language in my house,” meaning no vulgar language is allowed in my home.

9. You want to step outside? You want to take this outside? Do you want to resolve this outside? Just like us, when two people argue and get into a fight, someone might say this. It refers to going outside to fight. I’ve also heard similar expressions, such as, “Do you want to pick a fight?” Do you want to start a fight? Or “This means war.” That means declaring war on me.

10. You and what army? You and who else? Which group are you with? If someone says to you, “Do you want to step outside?”, you can reply with this. It means, “Oh... then how many people have you gathered to fight?” Sometimes, when this line appears on TV, there’s even an animated sequence showing rows of soldiers, which is quite interesting. Another fun phrase is, “Who’s side are you on?” This is said right before a fight, asking which side someone is on. Here are some examples for reference: 1. Stop complaining! Stop whining! 2.
