What is the typical design pressure for vacuum insulated storage tanks? Is it technically feasible to create a vacuum insulated tank with a design pressure of 1.7 MPa and a capacity of 100 m3? What is the investment required? By how much higher will the temperature of the stored medium be compared to its boiling point? Thank you
Most are at 0.8 MPa. Technically, proper physical and chemical tests are carried out to avoid inherent defects in the inner cylinder. The investment depends mainly on the price of steel; the medium used is LN2 at -196 degrees Celsius. I’m not clear about what you mean by “how much higher,” so please clarify. The operating pressure of conventional cryogenic liquid storage tanks for oxygen, nitrogen, and argon is generally between 0.2 and 3.0 MPa. There is no technical issue with the 100 m3/1.7 MPa vacuum storage tank you mentioned. Very mature. Generally, tanks with larger volumes use powder insulation. The investment amounts to around 1 million at current market prices~~
What when looking at the medium? For oxygen, nitrogen, and argon, the pressures are usually 0.8 or 1.6 MPa; for LNG, they are typically 0.6, 0.8, 1.2, etc. I am involved in the design of storage tanks.
